Containing the Pattern and Knitting Warmth: Inspiration from the Hexagram 63 of the Kun Trigram and Handmade Sweaters

In the hexagram of Kun, the third line of the hexagram states: "Containing virtue, one can be upright; either following royal affairs, or achieving nothing but having a fulfilling end." These eight characters of wisdom serve as a guide for the practice of those who knit handmade sweaters - hiding beauty within, adhering to righteousness, not claiming credit for achievements, and ultimately achieving perfection.

Hidden wisdom in the stitch: Embracing beauty in the needle, guarding the heart in the knitting

"Containing virtue" means having a brilliant mind but not showing off; "being virtuous" means adhering to the right path without deviation.

Those who knit sweaters understand this "implication" best. The wool in their hands is a soft and elegant symbol; the stitching on their fingertips is a sign of restraint and skill. They are not eager to show off their patterns, nor are they greedy for quick completion. Instead, they accumulate slowly, stitch by stitch.

Just as the earth encapsulates all things within its fertile soil, we embed our intentions, warmth, and patience into every stitch. We do not flaunt our skills or show off our finished products, but adhere to our original intention of "knitting every stitch well" - this is "kezhen".

In terms of royal affairs: act in accordance with the trend and do not exceed one's duty

"Or assisting the king" means acting in accordance with the situation, fulfilling one's duty to assist, and not forcibly taking the lead.

Knitting a sweater is never about "doing whatever I want". The material of the wool, the thickness of the needle, and the style requirements are all "major factors". We follow the nature of the wool, the rules of the stitch, and the intentions of the wearer.

Instead of forcibly twisting the direction of the wool, or blindly pursuing novelty, one should play the role of an "assistant" - allowing the wool to stretch, the stitching to flow smoothly, and the finished product to fit the heart. This is the wisdom of "following the king's will".

From Nothing to Something: Not dwelling on past achievements, but striving for a good beginning and a good end

"Wucheng" does not mean "no achievement", but rather "not taking credit and being arrogant"; "Youzhong" means "starting well and ending well", or "concluding satisfactorily".

A sweater is knitted, warming the family and beautifying life. But we don't say "This is my masterpiece", we just say "This is the destiny of wool and needle". We attribute the credit to the materials, to time, to that silent companionship.

Not craving praise, not obsessing over personal achievements, but solely focused on completing and excelling in the task at hand. From starting the stitch to finishing the stitch, from the neckline to the cuff, maintaining consistency - this is the essence of "achieving without achieving".

The "Hanzhang" story in history

Zhang Liang of the Western Han Dynasty assisted Liu Bang in establishing the empire and achieved unparalleled merits, yet he did not claim credit for himself. After the establishment of the Han Dynasty, he resigned from his royal title and only accepted the title of Marquis of Liu. He retired after achieving his goals and had a good end. His wisdom is precisely "withholding one's virtues to maintain one's integrity, and achieving nothing but having a good end.".

Just like we knit a sweater, we create warmth without claiming credit; we put in effort without flaunting it. Zhang Liang hid his brilliance in troubled times, and we hide our beauty in our stitches. It's like different tunes but equally skillful performances.

The hexagram of Kun teaches us to be a person who is "restrained yet abundant".

Knitting a sweater is like being a person: keep beauty in your heart, uphold integrity in your actions, go with the flow, and don't claim credit when you succeed.

With every stitch, a sweater is woven, and one's temperament is refined; with every knitting and storing, wisdom is preserved, and life is warmed.
